Traditions:
The Apache Indians have two different types of traditions: Formal and Informal.
Formal Traditions are their rituals and dances.
Informal Traditions are their ceremonies.
They also have coming of age ceremonies.
Other traditions:
They have the mothers carry their babies on a Cradleboard on their backs.
For special occasions they would paint their faces. Often with different patterns.
Events:
Cochise is the most famous Apache leader to resist Americans instructions.
The Apache War- when Cochise was falsely accused of kidnapping a white mans child. This was around the time of the Gold Rush and many white men wanted to stay and farm on their land.
The Gold Rush- When many white settlers came into the Apaches land looking for gold.
"Flag of Truce"- Cochise met with Army representatives under a flag of true to discuss this issue. They tricked him and tried to arrest him instead. There was a fight and he was wounded, but he escaped. Many of the Apache men were killed. The whites captured Apache men and woman, so the Apaches kidnapped a number of whites to exchange for the Apache captives. The whites then retaliated by hanging six of Apaches, some were Cochise family members.
Relocating Apaches- The U.S. Government relocated the Apache Indians to reservations.
Peace Commission to Arizona- President Ulysses Grant sent peace commission to Arizona. The commission's job was to set up a reservation system for the Indians. It was also to keep them safe. Many people in Arizona feared and hated the Apache Indians and they had many conflicts. So Cochise negotiated with the army to have his people moved to a reservation along Apache Pass. They committed to keep peace along the path between Indians and non-Indians, and it stayed that way until the death of Cochise in 1874.
